Summit Spa & Float: How Did COVID-19 Impact This Local Park City Business? (Interview)

COVID-19 has had devastating effects on the economy worldwide and nowhere is it felt more than in the small business market, including here in Park City. In this interview, Summit Spa & Float co-owner Katrina Long describes her experience in the pandemic so far and what community members can do to help.

Now more than ever, small businesses need the support of their communities. The COVID-19 pandemic forced organizations to close their doors and go without revenue for months on end, while still paying their leases and other expenses.

To help one small business share their story and reach out to the community, Nexus IT Consultants’ CEO Earl Foote recently interviewed Summit Spa & Float’s Katrina Long:

Partners Katrina Long and Samantha Butler founded Summit Spa & Float as an outlet for their passion for helping others. Katrina’s experience as a gymnast showed her the good that massage therapists can do, which is why she eventually chose it for her career.

Summit Spa & Float provides massage therapy, body treatments, and specialized “float” services (clients float in an Epsom salt bath, relaxing weightlessly, helping their bodies and minds relax). In business now for two years, and with two locations, Summit Spa & Float has become a staple of the Park City community. At the beginning of this year, Katrina and Samantha were looking forward to growing their business and helping even more clients.

Then the pandemic hit in March — in a matter of weeks, Summit Spa & Float, along with most other businesses, had to close their doors and wait until it was safe to open again. A few months later, Katrina and Samantha were able to reopen — but the damage was done.

“In mid-March, we were told we need to shut down, so we closed our doors for about two and half months,” says Katrina. “We’re just excited to be open in the community, and we’re ready for them to come in and see us.”

Even though they’re happy to be open again, the two and a half months they spent closed took a toll on their business. Due to the lack of revenue, they’ve had to consider whether they can continue with their lease.

“We’re trying to do what we can to stay afloat, so to speak,” says Katrina, “For right now, the way things are looking, it’s a rough road ahead.”

If you are in a position to help Summit Spa & Float, there are a few ways you can do so:

  • Book A Treatment: Help support this local business directly, and care for your own well being too.
  • Buy A Giftcard: If you’re not comfortable coming inside for treatment, you can buy gift cards to support Summit Spa & Float, and redeem them at a later date.
  • Promote Their Free First Responder Floats: They also offer free floats to first responders every second Thursday of the month. If you know a first responder, send them in; this is Summit Spa & Float’s way of giving back to the community, and they hope as many first responders take advantage of the offer as possible.

It’s never been more important to work together and keep Park City’s small business community alive. If you can support Summit Spa & Float, or want to get in touch to discover more about the services they offer, give them a call at 435-565-1036 or visit pc.summitspafloat.com.
